Phenoxyethanol
It is used as a preservative is dangerous for health and triggers
allergies such as eczema, rashes, and hives.
Diethanolamine
DEA is another chemical that you should be wary of. The chemical can cause liver
and kidney cancer which is terrible for health.
Parabens (methyl-, isobutyl-, propyl- and others)
A class of preservatives commonly used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold.
Parabens are endocrine (or hormone) disruptors, which may alter important hormone
mechanisms in our bodies.
Dioxane
Dioxane is a chemical that others think is good for the skin since it is derived from
synthetic coconut. However, this chemical is considered harmful since it can affect
the kidneys, brain, and liver if not avoided.
Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Chemical preservatives are among the most common irritants, sensitizers, and
causes of contact skin allergies.
Butylated hydroxy Anisole and Butylated Hydroxytoluene
Synthetic antioxidants are used to extend shelf life. They are likely carcinogens and
hormone disruptors and may cause liver damage.
Butylphenyl Methylpropional
Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA/Lilial) is classified as a Carcinogenic and is
ban in the UK and EU to use in cosmetics.
Palm Oil
Palm oil blocks pores and cause acne breakouts.
Formaldehyde
Used as a preservative in cosmetics—a known carcinogen linked to asthma,
neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity.
Phthalates
A group of chemicals is used in hundreds of products to increase the flexibility and
softness of plastics. They are endocrine disruptors and have been linked to an
increased risk of breast cancer.
SLS / SLES
SLS stand for sodium lauryl Sulphate, a chemical surfactant made of a
hydrocarbon chain (palm oil, coconut oil or petrol) & SLES Sodium Laureth
Sulphate breaks down most fats and grease due to their surfactant qualities. That
includes the natural oil that your skin produces called sebum. SLS & SLES are
harmful to the skin because they strip the skin of its natural grease, which fills the
gaps between skin cells allowing water to escape causing dry skin and eczema.
Hence, using SLS or SLES is terrible for the skin. It enables water loss, leaves the
barrier to water loss broken, and leaves you with dry skin or even eczema. SLS and
SLES free soap, or natural soap, is excellent for the skin because it contains
glycerine naturally produced in the soap-making process.
